2026 ATS Thirukkural Recital Competition
Austin Tamizh Sangam conducted a Thirukkural recital competition on October 10, 2026 at the Cedar Park Community Center. There were roughly 60 students who
registered in the three categories – Arumbu, Mottu, Mugai. Children in the Arumbu category were expected to know 25 Kural verses, while they would be asked to recite
any 12.
Children in the advanced category were required to be prepared for 75 verses with comfortable explaining the meaning for some as well. Judges were Mr.Manikandan, Mahalakshmi Rameshbabu and Dr. Ram Srinivasan – each have a love for the ‘Ara Nool’ (book of virtue) and are active in several activities of the Sangam. It was a delight to see the children say the Kural verses beautifully when prompted by the judges.
First the parents need big kudos; they want to imbibe moral values in their children, give them a lifetime compass to succeed and pass on the great Tamil treasure
for the next generation. Children as young as 4 participated. To hear them say the verses with confidence, with babble and even English accent was a delight. Judges said that they had a difficult time.
However, the focus is participation, learning and knowing the meaning of a few verses. For those who could not make it, you missed something that you can be proud of. Please join next year, enjoy, encourage, learn and pass on the treasure.
